June 21, 2022 in Harrisburg, Illinois

I accidentally woke up at 5 today... I guess my body is kind of adjusting to the early morning starts!

The chef at the community kitchen here at the church we are staying with made us breakfast for 6am, and I downed a whole bunch of coffee, eggs, and hashbrowns.

We rolled out to the build site nice and early–– the heat index for today was 105, so we wanted to be completely finished before it got too hot.

And that we were! We spent our morning painting the exteriors of two tiny houses, which are exactly what they sound like (miniature houses with only the bare bones of what you need for comfortable living). The houses are associated with an Illinois organization called the 4Cs, which is a Christan non-profit which has a food pantry and homeless shelter.

The houses are to serve as transitional housing for families of 3-4, and they will be paying only utilities while having a steady job for one year before moving on to more permanent housing.

After the build day, we had a barbeque lunch at another local church and then I took a very long nap.

When I woke up, we were about 10 minutes out of going to a host's pool, where we spent the entire fantastic afternoon.

We played pool games, the people who were of age drank cold beers, and we all listened to music and hung out.

It was a really, really lovely day.

Tomorrow, we're biking a shorter route to Carbondale and we are taking over a Dairy Queen for lunch! I'll head to bed early because the heat index of 105 means we're rising extra early!

That sounds so refreshing(the pool) not the 105. It’s been about 95-103 here in Las Vegas. Not too bad except our air conditioner went out yesterday!! I love to paint, it relaxes me. Your doing some great things helping people out. Your host all seem to be very nice.
